Matter is a film about the deep and enigmatic nature of the universe. It is set entirely inside one man's mind as he travels through his own memories and those of others. His musings lead him on a darkly ironic journey, ultimately revealing his own humanity in an alienating, existential wasteland. Matter explores what it means to be human in times of great change. The movie was written by an award-winning Indian novelist, Arundhati Roy, based on her novel of the same name which won The Hindu Literary Award for Best Novel in 2002. The film was produced by Producer Namrata Shirodkar, who also produced the film "Kahaani", starring Vidya Balan, Manisha Koirala and Sushant Singh. The music is composed by Vishal Shekhar. The film released on 13 February 2015. The story follows a man named Dhiru (Shah Rukh Khan) who travels through time and space to witness the birth of the universe. Through his journey, he learns about different characters in history and how they shaped history to be what it is today. It is a journey through memory and space, which leads him to a totally new perspective on life. Shooting began in London in August 2012 and moved to Mumbai in November 2012. The film is shot predominantly indoors, with various sets built by production designer Nitin Zihani Choudhary. Most of the film was shot using Steadicam to give it a sense of fluid motion. The art direction was inspired by sci-fi films like Interstellar (2014) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). A lot of research was done on the subatomic level. Many of the celestial objects are computer generated visual effects created by the visual effects team at Prime Focus World. The team used real-time 3D holographic imaging to create the effect, instead of building physical objects. Towards the ending of production, the team faced a problem in creating an ending sequence because it was too ambitious to achieve in time for its scheduled release date. To create an ending that blended seamlessly into the existing footage, production designer Nitin Zihani Choudhary was instructed to incorporate elements that are found in nature into the final space scene. The ocean floor is filled with wind-torn branches and sculptures of seaweed. The stars are made by lighting computer controlled lights in water tanks filled with warm water. Metal sculptures of flowers and blades of grass balance on the edge of the bathtub in the final scene. The film is set in a dystopian future where nature is essentially dead, and humanity has become an oppressive machine with no intrinsic value. The only thing that remains human is memory and what we remember, and how we choose to remember it. The film opens with a monologue: "We are not different from nature. We are part of it, we arise from it, we exist in its image". With his father dying, Dhiru travels back in time through many lives to see his past selves and how they made their way into their present choices/decisions which lead them to their destinies. cfa1e77820
